from Thursday, November 13.
I’m sure many of you have been at least exposed to the recent protests taking place in California regarding Proposition 8 – which is somewhat surprising seeing as how the media is not even mentioning it. The Los Angeles Temple is currently holding off thousands of protestors who are filling the streets, accusing the LDS church of being intolerant and stealing away their rights. I hope everyone who knows about these events is mortified. This isn’t just a normal protest march – there are LAPD and SWAT teams keeping post on the temple grounds!
Now let’s go back and evaluate why there are so many protestors. The gay community and some other “humanist” groups are accusing the LDS church that by voting in favor of Proposition 8, they prevented gay citizens from receiving rights that they feel they deserve. First off, let’s go over the Church’s role in the Proposition 8 campaign. How much did the Church donate? Less than...well...$0. On the other hand, members donated over $70 million, but those were individual donations, just like if you donated to the Obama campaign (and if you did, shame on you). Also, the LDS membership makes up about 2 percent of the population in California. So statistically speaking, now correct me if I’m wrong, but 2 percent of the population would not be able to accumulate the millions of votes that led to the passing of Proposition 8. So who made up the rest of the votes? Well, go 25 miles inland from the coast, and that’s where all the votes came from – the black and Latino populations. Wait, what!? That’s right. Blacks and Latinos also voted in favor of banning gay marriage.
So why are LDS members the ones being blamed and persecuted? Because the gay community knows if they start protesting against blacks and Latinos, then they’ll lose all credibility. That would be racist because blacks and Latinos are minorities. The media would rip them apart. But by protesting against the LDS church, the majority of the membership being white, nobody accuses the gay community of being racist or intolerant.
But here’s a scenario. Let’s say that Proposition 8 didn’t pass; that the gays actually won (and the nut-head members who were opposed to it, i.e. Steve Young). And let’s say that members of the church, or even just supporters of the proposition regardless of their religion, started going into San Francisco and protesting. Are you kidding me!? The world would explode! You can bet there would be all kinds of hate crime lawsuits that very day. The ACLU would have their phones ringing off the hook. The Church would be labeled as bigots, hate mongrels, intolerant, etc. etc. etc. (oh wait, it already is).
If the media treats this current story like they ethically should, the country will see who the real intolerant group is – the gay community. The church could easily solve the problem – send in the Polynesian wards and have them kick the crap out of those protestors. I mean, one Poly could take out 10-15 gays. But the church has obviously taken the higher road and not retaliated (although I’d love to go down there and throw down).
And just a little tidbit (which I know will get some peoples’ blood boiling): Everyone is NOT created equal. There, I said it. Whose idea was it to create everybody equal? Would that be….Satan? *Gasp* What? “Brad, you can’t say that!” Oh, but it’s true. Not everybody qualifies for the same rights as others. Just take a look at the three kingdoms of glory. Do you think God grants everybody the same rights? Better think again. So why does our society try to out smart God? Why do we try and give undeserving people the same rights as those who are deserving? When you take a step back and think about it, homosexuality is second most grievous sin that one can commit, second only to murder (it falls into the category of breaking the law of chastity). And we want to give these people the opportunity of engaging in the most sacred ceremony in life? Come on!
Romney ’12!
